Live it Up in 2012!

There are a few theories floating around that there will be some sort of worldly shift in 2012.  Of course, there is no way to know for sure what will happen next year, so I say let's live it up!  Whether there is a new level of consciousness, a heightened spiritually, a major natural disaster, a visit from Aliens, or something totally different, I say let's not worry about what is out of our control and focus on creating an amazing life for ourselves.  Do those things you have always wanted to do, tell people how you feel, say yes, don't sweat the small stuff, be yourself, and take chances!  Dance crazy, sing loudly, don't worry about what other people think, dress how you like! Live it up and take healthy risks!  You can choose what your 2012  will look like...join me and choose fun, life, creativity, love, & happiness!  No matter what happens this year, you don't want to look back with regrets...do it now!  Leave 2011 in the past and make 2012 your best year yet!

Welcoming Winter

Solstice gifts for the girls

As we awoke this morning to the return of the sun, we also awoke to a beautiful wintery day!  Almost a foot of snow on the ground was a sure sign that Mother Winter is gracing us with her presence.  We are rejoicing as the days lengthen and we prepare for a meaningful and fun Winter.  We made resolutions for the Winter, which was a new tradition for us, and I like how we created a seasonal intention for what we would like to accomplish this season.  And on the longest night of the year we all enjoyed sweet dreams!  Here's hoping you have a blessed, fun filled, and cozy Winter!

Simple Winter Solstice Traditions

I have been longing for some Winter Solstice traditions for a long time...however every year it seems like we do something different...which is OK, just not the traditions I have been hoping for.  The kids are at the age where they appreciate traditions and I am excited to create some for our family.  I truly love the Winter Solstice...there is such magic in the entire cycle of the seasons and Winter just seems to have that extra sparkle.  The snow, the moving inward, the darkness moving towards the light, and the holiday spirit that is all around us.

We started a few Winter Solstice traditions last year that we are carrying forward to this year and I love how excited the kids are to celebrate the Solstice.  Our traditions are very simple and flexible, yet a day that we look forward to celebrating.  This year my daughter has her Pre School Christmas program in the morning so we will start our day out watching her sing Christmas songs with her 4 and 5 year old buddies.  Then we will head home for breakfast burritos and open a Solstice Gift.  Then we will have lots of outdoor play and a walk.  Around 4:00 we will gather for a story out of Circle Round then a meal of Chili and bread, some family games, and an early bed time.  Last year we awoke very early on the following day to watch the sun rise at Red Rocks.  However this year we will not be carrying on this tradition and will watch the sun rise from our own home.

How about you? Do you have any Winter Solstice traditions you would like to share?Pin It

Just Breathe

It's a busy time for most folks...whether it's Christmas or Chanuka, or Winter, or school activities or work...let's face it, most of us are a bit extra busy this time of year.  It can be hard to slow down and actually enjoy the holidays with all the stress we put on ourselves.  So I am hear today to remind you to stop what you are doing and take a few breaths!  Below is a little exercise that I do when I get stressed and thought it might help you also!

When I am in the middle of a situation that is causing me discomfort, stress, anxiety or fear I immediately step away from whatever it is that I am doing...which is hard because the stress is usually caused by having a lot of stuff to get done, so walking away can make you feel like you are going to create more stress.  But, trust me, walking away is the best solution...and you will only be gone for 5-10 minutes.  I find a quiet space such as a bedroom, sit down, close my eyes, and breathe (some times you will need to hide out in the bathroom or take a shower or a quick walk...do whatever is feasible for you).  I take several deep breaths and imagine on the inhale I am filling my body with peace and calm.  On the exhale I imagine all of my stress, frustration, and fear flowing out of my body through my fingers and toes (it may seem silly, but it really does work and you may actually feel your fingers and toes tingling which is really cool).  I do this exercise for 5 minutes, open my eyes, and get back to work.  It is truly amazing how this changes my entire attitude and I realize nothing is worth all the worry and stress and that everything will get done and everything will be OK.

So give it a try!  And let me know what you think!  Hope you are enjoying a peaceful day!

Letting Go

I was laughing with my husband the other day about how much I have changed over the years.  The conversation was about how I used to always be so prepared when my oldest daughter was in pre school.  I always knew when I was helping out in class and would purchase snacks far in advance when it was my turn to bring them in.  The other day I was parent helping in my younger daughter's class and didn't even know if I was supposed to bring snack...I looked at my calender the morning of and realize it was my day to provide snack.  It was no big deal, though.  We stopped at the store on our way to pre school and picked up a snack and all was well.  I didn't stress one bit about the situation, which a few years ago I would have almost had an anxiety attack for waiting until the last minute.  I am not sure where this change came from exactly.  Could be a change in attitude due to my age, my work, my family, life experiences...who knows?  All I know is that I like it....I spend so much less time these days worrying about things and more time living.  Sure I still get stressed out, but I handle the stress better and bounce back much quicker.  I have the wisdom now to know that I am in charge of my world and how I respond to it.  When things aren't going my way, I may pout or freak out for a bit, but I have learned that all I need to do is change my thinking and it will all turn around...and turn around fast!  So the next time you are stressing about something, take a deep breath, think about all that is well in your life, roll your shoulders back, and let go! Pin It

Feature Friday: Sister Review of Arm/Leg Warmers

Arm/leg warmers are one of the hottest fashion trends this year! They are, in my opinion, the best fashion accessory! They look amazing and are so practical! They keep you soo warm. These enable you to wear your favorite short sleeve shirts or skirts year round, stay warm and look great all at the same time! Plus they are good all year so you really get your moneys worth. You can throw them in your purse, your backpack, or keep them in your car, so even in the summer when it gets a little cooler at night you can always throw a pair of warmers on. Plus you can wear them on your arms, legs or even both.

I chose the warmers in black, thinking they would go with anything. I was so right! Even my 13 year old has worn them while riding his bike! I have worn them everywhere and with all kinds of shirts. I particularly like this style because they are not at all bulky but still very warm. They are great alone or when you need to layer in chilly weather. I look forward to getting more colors!

For kiddos, from birth up, the leg/arm warmers are a wardrobe staple! They are perfect for little ones still in diapers, making changing time so much easier. They’re warm but not bulky, which my 4 year old, Malaya Rayne, loves! She doesn’t leave the house without them! If she isn’t wearing them she puts them in her backpack and brings them to pre-school and her sitters. They are so easy for her to put on herself and she loves the rainbow pattern!

Malaya will put them on under skirts, dresses, even jeans. When she is wearing jeans or pants she even rolls up the pant legs so you can see the stripes! After seeing hers, all Malaya ’s cousins now want their own arm/leg warmers. They come is so many colors and patterns there is a style for everyone and they can brighten up any outfit.

Green Adventures

Last month my girls attended Green Adventures, put on by our local Loveland Youth Gardeners.  The kids did eco friendly crafts, planted garlic, baked pumpkin muffins, danced and had a great time.  I feel very fortunate that we have this program in our town as it is very important we teach our children about their natural surroundings and how to take care of our Earth.  If you are in the Northern Colorado area, please check out Loveland Youth Gardeners and see if there is a program that would work for you kids.  This weekend Green Adventures is all about Green Gifts and the kids will make gifts made from natural and recycled material.  They will also go on a Winter walk and learn about the Winter landscape.  There is still time to sign up for this Saturday's class...it is from 9-11:30 at the Environmental Learning Center in Loveland, CO.  This could be a good opportunity to drop your kids off for a fun morning while you head out to the local shops in Loveland and get some Christmas shopping done!  The class is for 5-12 year olds.  Hope to see you there!  Call 970-669-7182 to register your child before Saturday.Pin It

OSC: Gift Wrapping Sustainably

Are you giving gifts this holiday season?  Have you thought about how you will wrap them?  Traditional wrapping paper is very wasteful as it takes a lot of resources to make and then gets chucked in a garbage bag and sent to the landfill each year.  This year I challenge you to think outside of the box...think about the 3 R's (reduce, reuse, recycle) when wrapping this year.  And even if you just choose 1 gift to wrap sustainably, you will be making a difference.  Below are a few examples of sustainable gift wrap.

1.  Fabric Wrap:  Do you have fabric laying around the house?  Fabric makes perfect gift wrap as you can cover the gift in the fabric, then tie a nice bow on top with yarn or ribbon.  Play silks, an old blanket, scraps from an old project.

2.  Bags:  A lot of people use bags nowadays when gift giving and this is a great idea.  People are more likely going to keep a bag and reuse it than keep wrapping paper to reuse.  You can use all kinds of bags from paper bags to fabric bags.  Try wrapping in a cloth produce or grocery bag then the bag becomes part of the gift.  If you receive a gift in a bag, be sure to keep that bag and reuse it!

3.  Go Without:  Each year the girls get a gift from Santa that is not wrapped at all.  They are still just as excited to receive the gift and don't mind at all that it isn't wrapped.  Try not wrapping a few gifts this year!

4.  Use Recycled Paper:  If you do use wrapping paper search out sustainable brands that make the paper from recycled materials.  You can often find natural and beautiful looking paper...this is what we use for our gift wrap option in our shop.

5.  Reuse:  Do you have any old magazines, coloring books, catalogs, or even maps lying around?  Using old paper items is a great way to wrap presents.

Do you have any ideas for sustainable gift wrap?

Can you commit to wrapping at least 1 gift sustainably this year?  Join the challenge and let's make a difference together!

*OSC stands for One Small Change...our one small change project is our effort to encourage others to make one small green change at a time for our planet. Each week I write 1 post with ideas, inspiration, and encouragement to help you along this journey of living a more sustainable life. Spreading Peace ☮

For me, this time of year is about peace, love, family, friends, cheer, and giving.  It is a time to really think about others and give whether it's with a gift, a gathering, a blessing, or kind words.  I would like to give the gift of peace this year...to anyone and everyone I come in contact with.  I admit I am not always the most peaceful person, but I strive to create the most peaceful existance possible for myself and my family.  To keep peace on the brain this season my goal is to create peace signs wherever I can...to surround myself with thoughts and visions of peace.  Peace cookies, snow peace, peace wreaths...whatever I can convert into a peace sign I will.  With peace on the brain my hope is to remind myself to stay peaceful this season...to confront situations with a calm and peacefull attitude, to give more hugs, to pay more attention to my kids, to gather with friends, and take lots of deep breaths.  How about you?  How will you bring more peace into your life this season? ☮Pin It

Snow Love

I really do love the snow.  Not only is it beautifully magical, but it is also so much fun!  Snowshoeing, snowboarding, sledding, snow angels, snow men...so much to do in the snow!  In Colorado we have the best weather...we may have a foot of snow on the ground and be 20 degrees out, but with the sun shining, calm wind, and a warm jacket, you can hang out outside and really enjoy yourself!

What do you love about the snow?Pin It
