Let's say you get groceries and have them packaged in plastic bags. When you get home you decide you have enough plastic bags in your stash so you throw the 3 bags in your trash. The trash man picks up your trash and the bags are on their way to the land fill. Perhaps while they are getting dumped one of the bags blows away. While it is blowing around on it's journey several people see it and have the opportunity to pick it up and dispose of it again, but no one makes that choice. Eventually the bag ends up in the ocean's garbage patch and maybe a fish will consume parts of it making them sick and perhaps die.
When we throw things away or drive our car or waste food, we don't think about what happens after our actions. We don't think about where the waste goes or who or what it will affect along the way. In the example of the plastic bag there were many choices made that led to an un natural object floating through nature and eventually harming animals. We could have chosen to bring our own bags to the store or saved the plastic bag to use again. The people who saw the bag flying around could have taken a moment to grab the bag and dispose of it hoping that it wouldn't have the same fate. If you choose to bring your own bags to the store you are a part of the movement and may influence someone else to bring their own bags...you may never know that you encouraged someone else, but your simple choice to bring your own bags could have a part in changing the world!
So next time you think your actions don't matter or your choices do not affect the world, think about that plastic bag and try to imagine it's fate. We can't do it all...we can't change all of our habits today...but we can change things in our daily life one small change at a time. Try bringing your own bags, try buying organic apples, try not flushing every time, use 1 tablespoon less of laundry detergent each time...there are so many small things you can do to make a difference!
