OSC: Your Choices Will Change The World

Did you ever think that your choices could change the world?  Well, it's true!  I am talking in terms of living a more eco friendly lifestyle and how your actions will affect our Earth and everyone who lives on Earth.  Our world is grand and we are pretty small comparatively speaking, but together we all make up the world and we are all interconnected on some level.

Let's say you get groceries and have them packaged in plastic bags.  When you get home you decide you have enough plastic bags in your stash so you throw the 3 bags in your trash.  The trash man picks up your trash and the bags are on their way to the land fill.  Perhaps while they are getting dumped one of the bags blows away.  While it is blowing around on it's journey several people see it and have the opportunity to pick it up and dispose of it again, but no one makes that choice.  Eventually the bag ends up in the ocean's garbage patch and maybe a fish will consume parts of it making them sick and perhaps die.

When we throw things away or drive our car or waste food, we don't think about what happens after our actions.  We don't think about where the waste goes or who or what it will affect along the way.  In the example of the plastic bag there were many choices made that led to an un natural object floating through nature and eventually harming animals.  We could have chosen to bring our own bags to the store or saved the plastic bag to use again.  The people who saw the bag flying around could have taken a moment to grab the bag and dispose of it hoping that it wouldn't have the same fate.  If you choose to bring your own bags to the store you are a part of the movement and may influence someone else to bring their own bags...you may never know that you encouraged someone else, but your simple choice to bring your own bags could have a part in changing the world!

So next time you think your actions don't matter or your choices do not affect the world, think about that plastic bag and try to imagine it's fate.  We can't do it all...we can't change all of our habits today...but we can change things in our daily life one small change at a time.  Try bringing your own bags, try buying organic apples, try not flushing every time, use 1 tablespoon less of laundry detergent each time...there are so many small things you can do to make a difference!

Are you a part of our One Small Change Project?  If so leave us a comment and let us know what small changes you are making!

And please take a few minutes to watch this empowering speech by a brave young girl who knows that our actions are affecting her future...and she is not happy about it!

Feature Friday: Tree Hugger Hoodie

Yes, I know it's not Friday, but since we missed Feature Friday last week, I thought we would start this week out with a feature.

Today I am show casing one of my favorite new items, The Tree Hugger Hoodie.  I am a big fan of hoodies as they are easy to throw on or off, go with anything, and let's face it, sometimes you just need a hood!  The Tree Hugger Hoodie is extremely soft and nice and thick.  It is going to keep you warm when the temperature dips late afternoon and will keep you snug around the home or office.

The Tree Hugger Hoodie is hand designed & printed in the USA using low impact dyes by a small company.  It is made with a blend of 55% organic cotton and 45% recycled polyester making this an eco friendly fashion.

This item is unisex so great for guys and gals!  It runs large for women so check the measurements and consider purchasing a size smaller than you normally wear.  I usually wear a size M-L and fit nicely in a small with this hoodie.

Makes a great holiday gift for that special someone and will be a cherished item for many years.Pin It

When the Kids are Away, Mama Will Play

We enjoyed a nice Thanksgiving at my in laws this year who live just over an hour away.  After a nice meal, hanging out in the sunshine, and a few games, Andy and I drove home...yes, just Andy and I.  We left the kiddos with their Grandma for 3 nights.  We knew we would be busy this weekend so it was a nice opportunity to let the kids have a little vacation while we worked.  But, let me tell you, it wasn't all work around here!  I was at home all alone for 2 whole days!  I was nervous at first, but I knew I would figure it out.  So..after the work is done, emails answered, and facebook finally gets boring, what is a Mama home alone to do?  I will give you a little peak into what this Mama did!

Hot bath, lots of tea, a good book (The Wise Heart by Jack Kornfield), Janis Joplin on Spotify, an attempt at a new hair style, 2 nights out on the town with friends, quiet journalling...and honestly I would love to add 50 awesome things to this list (went for a solo hike, meditated for an hour, had lunch with a friend, went to a spa)...but none of those things happened. It was a simple yet recharging way to spend my long weekend.

And did I have the house in beautiful shape for the kids, clean room, washed sheets, a fridge full of food when the kids got home??  Well, no.  I actually thought that it would be nice to have a clean house for a few days, but who wants to waste their time cleaning when they finally have some alone time?  Not this Mama!Pin It

Handmade Holiday Wreath

Each year the girls and I make a holiday craft...or several most years.  We usually make ornaments, but this year we decided to make wreaths.  Making these yarn wrapped wreaths was a really easy and fun craft and created beautiful wreaths.  I had to help my youngest quite a lot because we used a hot glue gun, but my 7 year old did most of hers on her own.

Here is what we used:
wreath base
yarn
decoration
hot glue gun

How we made it:
Glue the end of the yarn to the wreath base and start wrapping.  Keep wrapping and apply glue about every inch or 2 along to make sure the yarn stays secure to the base.  Once you are done wrapping apply more glue to the end and let dry for a minute.  Then grab the decorations and glue them on.  Tie some ribbon or yarn for hanging.  Enjoy!

Mindful Holiday Shopping

This weekend is one of the biggest shopping weekends of the year and a lot of you will be partaking,  If you are like me, however, just the thought of traffic and crowds brings on the anxiety.  We are lucky these days to have a lot of shopping options on line where folks from anywhere in the country have access to quality and unique products.  From Ebay and Etsy to small Mom and Pop shops on up to large chain stores all offer products on line nowadays.

For some of you Black Friday shopping is a tradition...the excitement of getting up at 3:00 A.M., the thrill of finding a deal, and even scoring a few free gifts along the way while enjoying the time spent with friends and family.  I am sure it is a fun time and maybe one of these days I will partake.

After you are done with your local shopping and hopefully scored some great deals while supporting local establishments, consider hopping on line to finish up.  Or, if you are skipping on the traffic and crowds like me, join the many others who have already discovered and enjoyed on line holiday shopping.  There are a lot of on line deals to be had from free shipping to discounts and free gifts.  When checking out a website make sure to check their blog and facebook before placing an order to see if they have listed sales.  Some times sales will be obvious, but other times you need to use a coupon code to get the deals.  And always check the 'about us' section when shopping on a website...get a feel for who the people are behind the store front.  You will get a feeling instantly about whether you feel like spending your money with that particular shop.

When choosing where to spend your hard earned dollars this year, consider making mindful choices.  Choose small businesses over large corporations if you can.  Choose businesses that have similar values to your own.  Choose companies who will be using the money you spend with them to good use...either donating to causes, to support their family, to grow their ethical business, or to spend with other small businesses or within the local community.  Together we can change the world and create a place where customer service, quality, and hand made are more valued.  You vote with your dollars!

**And of course we would like to remind you that our small family business is offering you a wonderful deal going on now through Monday Nov 28th at midnight.  $10 off any order $50-$99 with code 'TG10' and $20 off any order $100+ with code 'TG20'

Many thanks to all of you!

Be Positively Thankful

As we approach Thanksgiving most of us are focusing on what we are thankful for in our lives.  With powerful thankful energy in the air it is hard not to think about all the amazing people and experiences in our lives.  Family, friends, health, a warm home.  Everyone has something they can be thankful for right?  Yes, it's true...no matter what is going on in your life, there is always someone who loves you and that is more than enough to be thankful for.  However it is easy to focus on the negative in our daily lives and what is going wrong...we hear a lot of complaining throughout the day don't we...it's too cold, my pants don't fit, the toast is burnt, so and so didn't call me back.  Or even bigger complaints such as pain, or the loss of a job, or a sick child.

When we focus on the negative it attracts negative energy into our lives making the situation worse.  Complaining about a situation just brings us down and everyone around us down...although most people still do this on a daily basis (me included).  Some how we think other people want to hear our complaints and we join in on small talk all the time that revolves around negativity.  Think about it...I'm sure you have been in a situation where you are with a group of people, at the gym, bus stop, school, a new job, etc.  It is quiet and no one wants to break the silence, until someone does, and it is almost always negative small talk..."isn't it cold outside" "can you believe how long we have to wait" "this class looks so hard" "I am running so late today".  We think that if we have a common complaint it will bond us and give us something to talk about.  And it is such a habit for most of us we don't even think about what we are doing.

With this in mind, my challenge for you is to break this habit of complaining and pointing out the negative in situations.  When you are surrounded by loved ones this holiday, think about what you are thankful for.  If you are having trouble finding the good in a situation, dig deep and I promise you will find it.  And next time you are in an awkward situation with strangers, break the ice with a positive statement.."what a nice day" "I like your hat" "I can't wait for class to start".  Be the change and start a trend of positive thankfulness all year long!

Happy Thanksgiving to my American Friends!  I am thankful for each and every one of you!

OSC: The No Poo Hair Washing Method

Have you heard of No Poo?  It is an all natural method of washing your hair using baking soda and apple cider vinegar in place of shampoo and conditioner.  I love it and strongly recommend you try it! I was hesitant at first, but now I love it even more than any shampoo I have ever used.

I did a lot of research and found that everyone does it just a little different. I took what I learned and came up with a way that works for me. I use the baking soda and water mix in place of the shampoo, then use the apple cider vinegar and water mixture in place of a conditioner.

I made the video below a year ago and since then have gone back and forth between the no poo method and my natural shampoo.  After about a month of using the no poo my hair dries out so I will switch to shampoo for a week or so and then go back.  I have heard that by adding rosemary to the baking soda mix helps with the dryness, but I haven't tried this yet.  If you have any tricks on helping with dryness, please let me know!

Please watch the video below for details on how it works:

Behind the Scenes @ HMM Headquarters

Whoops!  I forgot to clean before this photo shoot!  But, that was really the point...to see a little glimpse into my reality!  A messy office, working in my PJ's, kids hanging around most of the time.  Sure I straighten up some times, but honestly the office is a place that gets neglected.  For those of you who don't know, we really do work out of our home.  We converted one of our daughter's room into an office and use our basement for our warehouse.  So when we say small family business, we really mean it!

Cheers to keepin it real!

Let's Talk About Hemp

Hemp tends to get a bad wrap because it is in the same family as the psychoactive Cannabis drug. However, what some people don't realize is that hemp is extremely beneficial and there are no harmful effects of it. It is an amazing plant that has so many uses and is so healthy for us, but yet it still remains illegal to grow in the U.S.

Industrial Hemp is produced in many countries around the world including Canada, France, and China. The United States is the only industrialized nation to ban industrial hemp. While Hemp is imported in the United States more than in any other country, the U.S. Government does not distinguish between marijuana and non-psychoactive cannabis used for industrial and commercial purposes.

Industrial hemp has many uses, including paper, textiles, biodegradable plastics, health food, and fuel. It is one of the fastest growing bio masses known and one of the earliest domesticated plants known. Hemp requires little to no pesticides, no herbicides, controls erosion of the topsoil and produces oxygen. Furthermore, hemp can be used to replace many potentially harmful products, such as tree paper (the processing of which uses bleach and other toxic chemicals, and contributes to deforestation), cosmetics, and plastics, most of which are petroleum-based and do not decompose easily.

Hemp seeds contains all the essential amino acids and essential fatty acids necessary to maintain healthy human life. The seeds can be eaten raw, ground into a meal, sprouted, made into "milk" , prepared as tea, and used in baking. The fresh leaves can also be eaten in salads.

I first started getting interested in hemp about 11 years ago when I went into a favorite shop and saw they were selling hemp clothing. I bought a skirt and a tank top and still wear them often. Every time I wash these clothes they got softer and softer...the material is wonderful!! Hemp clothing is made to last...so it may be a bit more expensive then your every day pesticide covered cotton items, but it is well worth it when you are still wearing it proud many years later. Today I use many hemp items including; clothes, wash cloths, wallet, curtains, jewelry, bath mats, napkins, and I even use hemp string to hang my laundry to dry on. I also put hemp powder in our smoothies every day to reap the health benefits.

So, when you hear the word hemp, you should think good things, not negative. Think of all the amazing things hemp can do. It's a miracle plant that we need to start taking more advantage of in this country...What do you think?Pin It

OSC:A Greener Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is quickly approaching and honestly it is hard to believe.  We have had such a warm Autumn here that Thanksgiving has really felt like it snuck up on us.  But it's here ...in just over a week we will be gathering with friends and family to enjoy Thanksgiving traditions.  Whether you are hosting this year or going to someone elses house, here are a few ways you can make this holiday a bit more eco friendly.

~Buy organic-Whether you usually buy 90% of your groceries organic or 0%, why not make an effort to choose 1 item that you wouldn't normally buy organic and find an organic and/or local alternative.  Green beans perhaps...maybe the potatoes?

~Reuse-If you are hosting Thanksgiving this year, forget about the paper plates and use your regular dishes.  If you must use disposable search out eco friendly brands that are biodegradable or made with recycled materials.

~Compost and Recycle-throw your fruit and veggie scraps in the compost pile and your recyclables in the appropriate bin.  If you attend an event where they don't recycle, consider taking the recyclable products home with you to put in your bin.

~Cloth Napkins-Set out cloth napkins at dinner. If you don't have enough, simply find some material and cut it into squares...don't worry about the ends fraying, it's only a napkin!

If you can select 1 item from this list, you will be making a difference!  And think, if we all did 1 thing from this list we could make an even larger impact!  Have you made an easy eco friendly change lately?  If not, or even if you have, here is your chance to make a difference!  I am going to someone elses home for Thanksgiving this year and I plan to make my dish using organic ingredients.  What will you do?

Please share your Green Thanksgiving ideas with us in the comments below!

Feature Friday: Flare Yoga Pants

I love all kinds of clothing and enjoy expressing myself by what I wear...and as you can imagine, I get to see and try on lots and lots of clothing as potential items for my shop.  My criteria when selecting clothing is based on comfort, color, quality, and uniqueness.  Everything in our shop meets these needs (and a lot of it ends up in my closet), but every once in a while I find an article of clothing that stands out above the rest.  You know when you find something that you just want to wear all the time...it's like finding something that is as comfortable as wearing your pajamas, goes with everything, and can be worn for any occasion...you know what I'm talking about don't you?

I am really excited about doing this review today, because our Flare Yoga Pants are something I have fallen in love with this Fall.  The basic black color makes these perfect to pair with any top...including tank tops, sweaters, dresses, or even a tee shirt.  And the Flare bottom on these make them stand out compared to your other black yoga pants...it dresses them up a bit and allows you to wear them for a night out on the town (or even that Christmas party that's coming up).

They are fitting throughout the thigh area which makes them feel very comfortable and honestly pretty dang sexy.  The waist is a roll over that can be rolled over all the way to create the look of having a little black skirt over the pants or you can just roll it down a bit to meet your comfort needs.  They go great with flip flops, boots, or tennis shoes!  We call these yoga pants and they are amazing for practicing yoga, but I promise you will want to wear these pants so many other times.  I have worn them for anything from entertaining to taking the dog for a walk!

So, if you are looking for something new this season to jazz up your wardrobe and is useful for many occassions, our Flare Yoga Pants are it.  Everyone needs a pair of cute black pants in their closet and I promise you won't be disappointed in these!  And...if you really want to jazz it up, try out Tie Dye Flare Yoga Pants made with organic cotton!!Pin It

OSC: What's the Deal With Cotton Coffee Filters

In my family's quest to replace as many products as possible to reusable, we recently discovered reusable coffee filters.  If you are like us, then you have a pot of coffee brewing each morning...let's face it, we love our coffee. And each morning we put a paper filter in and throw it away.  Not only is this creating waste, but also wasting money.  Let's do a comparison:

Cost:  Paper coffee filters cost around $1.25 for 100 filters.  Since there are 365 days in a year, if you make coffee 1 time per day, you are spending around $4.57 per  year on filters...and if you make more than 1 pot per day you may be spending more.  Not a large expense, but can add up over time.  If you purchase 1 organic cotton coffee filter you make an investment of $7.99.  So, after less than 2 years you are already saving money.

Waste This one is pretty obvious...you are either throwing away 365 paper coffee filters each year to grow old in the landfill or you are reusing 1 filter every day and create 0 waste.

Health  Think about it...you are drinking a liquid that is first passing through paper.  Paper contains chemicals and these chemicals leach into your drink.  We are now learning that these chemicals can be toxic for your health.  By using an organic cotton filter you are avoiding all the chemicals that you would get from a paper filter.  The less chemicals we put in our bodies, the healthier we will be.

Taste  The chemicals from the paper filters can and does affect the flavor of the coffee.  You will notice your coffee tasting much better after using an organic cotton reusable filter

Convenience Yes, it is more convenient to throw away a paper filter every day..however it is very easy to care for your reusable filter.  Simply rinse it out after each use and use again.  You can also throw it in the washing machine or hand wash with soap and water every so often so you don't get an oil build up.  Now, think about never running out of coffee filters again!  Never adding them to your grocery list or purchasing them from the store.  The added work of using a reusable filter is very minimal and worth it when you look at all the other benefits!

If you would like to try one out, we currently have them in our shop in basket size, Cone #2, and Cone #4.  These are hand made by a small company in Canada.

And, check out these testimonials we have received from our customers:

"The coffee filter works amazingly well! I will be honest, and reveal that I was expecting it to be a little ho hum. I was going to use it and it was going to work, but it wouldn't be anything to "write home about." I was wrong! This little filter leaves virtually no grounds in the bottom of the pot, does not distort the coffee flavor at all, and it so easy to care for! Spot on for finding this little gem!" ~ Valerie

"Hi Suzy! Just wanted to drop you a line about my recent purchase, which included a reusable coffee filter. I've been using a size 2 cone coffee pot for ages. Its been a good coffee pot and I liked it well enough, but it never failed that after a few months of use I always had a strange taste to my coffee. It came with a reusable metal filter. Even with regular washing it always was a bit bitter. Well those days are OVER!! The cotton filter I bought from you #1 fits perfectly, #2 NO AFTERTASTE!!, and #3 is soooo much easier to clean! If I am washing snack taxis I just throw it in with them. If I'm not I wash it when I do dishes. No fuss, no muss. Its well made and I expect a long happy life from it! Thank you for carrying such good quality products. I truly appreciate the work you and Andy are doing! I also appreciate loving my morning coffee again without having to use an unnecessary paper filter!!!" ~Charlotte

Feature Friday: Sister Review of Butterfly Hoodie

I'm way diggin' my Butterfly Hoodie from Hip Mountain Mama. It's a beautiful Fair Trade, long-sleeve hoodie made out of 95% Viscose and 5% Lycra, so it's super soft, stretchy and fitting. It's REALLY comfy and the colors are beautiful.

I really like unique, one-of-a-kind tops to express my creative personality, so this hoodie is perfect for me. The butterfly applique is hand-stictched on the front, and there is hand stitching around the hood, which is really a unique touch.

I recently wore my hoodie up in the mountains...just relaxing and playing some music with the hubby.

The hoodie also has some side pockets, which is nice, too.

Check out more unique clothing at Hip Mountain Mama!
My favorite hip store that cares about people and the environment---all products are handmade, sustainable and Fair Trade for anyone with a natural attitude at any altitude!

Take it easy,
~Misheli

*Our Butterfly Hoodie is offered in 2 different color schemes and is available from size S-2X

☮Peace ☮

I'm not sure about the demanding part of this statement, but it is true that Americans are in love with their television sets.  If we put as much effort towards creating a more peaceful world as we do towards hooking up every room in our home with TV, we might just get somewhere.  I personally think the way we can demand it, is by setting a good peaceful example.

Can you create peace today?  Anyway you choose to do it, make  an effort to bring a little more peace into your world.  Join the 30 days of giving thanks challenge, plant a tree, smile at a stranger, hug a friend, say yes to your kids.  Whatever small peaceful gesture you make, will create more peace...for you, your friends, and anyone you come in contact with.  Lead by example and the world will follow...I don't know anyone who couldn't use a little more peace in their lives!

Peace
Suzy

OSC: A November Change Anyone?

Well hello November!  We started One Small Change back up in October and many of you joined me in making 1 small eco friendly change.  My personal change was to get back into the habit of hanging my laundry to dry and so far it has been a success.  With colder weather setting in, it will be more of a challenge, but I am still sticking with my goal to hang it at least once a week.  So, now that November is here, I have decided I am ready for another change.

My November change is a really small and easy change, but very important and will make a difference after time.  I am going to keep the bathroom light off.  I have a wonderful window in my bathroom that lights it up with a lot of natural light.  But I am in the bad habit of turning on the light every time I go in there.  Of course I will still turn on the light at night, but as for during the day, the light needs to stay off.  I don't need the extra light, it is just a habit to turn it on.

My hope is that by keeping this one light off in the house during the day, we can save on electricity which will save money and be beneficial for our planet.  I am also hoping it will remind me to keep lights off in other parts of the house and set a good example for my children.

So....how are your changes going?  Are you ready to move onto a new change or are you still working on your change from October?  I would love to hear from you...let me know what eco friendly changes you are making!Pin It
