Hip Clothes For Kids

As Hip Mamas we like to express ourselves through the clothes we wear, how we style our hair, and our accessories.  It is fun to show of our individuality to the world!  As a Mama of 2 young girls I like for them to be able to show off their own personal style as well.  Let's face it, I would not always pick out the same things as they do, but hey...they are their own little people and I embrace their style choices.

When kids are younger, we get to pick what they wear, and that is really fun...but most kids hit a certain age where they know what they like and will only wear what they choose.  Over the years I have come to realize that my kids like color...they like anything bright, colorful, and with lots of designs.  This may also be true for your kids as most kids are just drawn to fun styles.

In our shop we offer a kids section filled with colorful tee shirts, dresses, leg warmers, and more.  Our kid clothing section is small, but it is slowly growing and we have enjoyed your input along the way.  With things like rainbow leg warmers, tie dye tees, and patchwork dresses, your child is sure to find something to show of his or her own personal funky style!

A Tradition

I've got my favorite skirt, the picnic skirt, on with some flair yoga pants on underneath...this worked great for the changing weather we get in the mountains...and so comfy!!

Last weekend, for the 5th year in a row, we headed up to our favorite little mountain town for our favorite little music festival.  We had a lot going on this summer and actually missed most of the festivals we usually attend...but we never let Ned Fest pass us by.  Do you have one of these events in your life?  An event that no matter what else is going on in your life, it's just a given that you will be at that festival, or concert, or tournament, etc.  Ned Fest is special...and if you have ever gone, you know what I mean.  It's small, intimate, beautiful, relaxing, fun, and high energy all at the same time.  You just walk into the place and instantly feel connected to everything that is going on all around you.  The people are kind, the music is groovy, the scenery is breath taking, and the weather is always amazing (even though it does rain for a bit every year).  My favorite part is getting to chat with band members as they hang around after their sets or as they are packing up their cars..yes it's that intimate that chatting with band members is not an unusual occurrence!  So if you ever get a chance...check it out..hope to see you there next year!  Here are a few blog posts from years past!

My Fortune Blessing Corner

I'm a mover and a shaker...a dreamer who makes things happen. I thrive on adventure and on new experiences.  When we landed in our current house I always thought it would be a short stop in our journey of life.  In fact we tried to sell our home and tried to move to a few different places all without any action.  Things were going on in the world that were out of our control and it made getting up and moving a bit more difficult.  Plus I truly believe, now, that the universe wanted us to stay put for a while.  Every time we made a move, the universe shot us down.  It really bummed me out for a while...but recently I am more at peace with the universes decision. I am here for a reason so I better well enjoy it!

With my new and improved attitude about staying put for a while I decided it was time to spice up my home.  We have lived here for 6 years and although I am constantly moving furniture around, I had never really put my personal touch on things...I was afraid to paint, afraid to hang certain things in the home, and basically afraid to let my freak flag fly in this quiet conservative neighborhood.

A couple of weeks ago the idea of Feng Shui came into my life (via Hannah Marcotti...LOVE her).  It really appealed to me and I decided to go with my instincts and give it a try.  I got a few books from the library and went to work.  At this point I have only changed a few things around, but I really like what I have done and am already feeling more at home...in my home!

I wanted to share my favorite change with you today and maybe you will be inspired to do the same thing in your home!  My Fortune Blessing, or abundance corner, was created to bring more fortune, wealth, and abundance in so many ways into my life.  This corner is going to be the farthest left corner in your home upon entering through the main entrance (front door in my case).  You can also create these corners in every room as the far left corner from the entrance. (To learn more about how to create your Fortune Blessing area check out some books...I read Feng Shui Demystified by Clear Englebert).

My Fortune Blessing area happened to be a corner in my kitchen.  On the counter I had a bowl for fruit/veggies, 3 cutting boards, and some other clutter.  It is very important that this corner be uncluttered, so I cleared everything from this corner immediately.  I moved a water fall that my brother in law made from our bedroom to this corner as flowing water is a great way to attract Chi.  I put a few purple stones around the water and then got out the paints!  I found a stencil that had the most perfect words that I wanted written on the wall in this corner...such as dream, success, love, imagine, joy...

Each day I wake up and go straight to this corner.  I turn on the water fall and enjoy it's calming effects. I also enjoy glancing at the words and feeling the excitement of the abundance that is coming into my life!

So...give it a try!  The corner will not only bring you the fortune you seek, but it will also make you feel happy and full of joy that you created such a special corner in your home!!Pin It

For the Love of Outdoors

We call this our vacation home because it really is our home away from home in the summer.  The beauty is we can set her up wherever we want and it was a very small investment!
Our dog Meadow is the perfect camping dog!
Magnolia is enjoying the beautiful wildflowers
If there is water near by, we will have our toes in it!

One of my favorite things to do is just this!  Sit in a river and drink a beer...there is just something about the sound of the water, the cooling on my feet, and the delicious beverage that makes me feel completely relaxed and at one with the world!

I didn't grow up camping, in fact my first camping trip was when I was in my 20's.  When I met Andy we discovered we both had a passion for being outdoors (on our 2nd date we went skiing/snowboarding) and camping was something we both enjoyed.  So, we camped...and we camped...and we camped.  Now that we have kids, we continue to camp and are passing on our love to them.  And, they LOVE it also.  This past weekend we ventured out on what was probably our last camping trip of the season.  As I was reflecting back I starting asking myself why I love camping so much.  Let's face it, it's a lot of work, and I don't sleep very well...and oh, did I mention how much work it is!  When I get home from a trip and the laundry is done and the camp gear put away, I never look back and think about how much work it was...I think about how much fun we had.  Being outdoors all day and night, bonding over a campfire, exploring new areas, and feeling that connection to Mother Earth.  I may be tired, but being outdoors energizes me...the thought that all I have to do all day is hang around outdoors with family and friends always brings a smile to my face.  Breathing fresh air, walking on the dirt, star gazing, gorgeous scenery, and complete nature all around me is what I really love!  So, even with the work and the sleepless nights, camping is something I enjoy more than anything in this whole world.  The more times we go, the less the "work" bothers me and the easier the whole process gets.  So, my thought for you today is to get out there and do what you enjoy!  Whether it's camping, running, hula hooping, singing, or sky diving, make time for your passions!!

Patchwork: It's Eco Friendly

Patchwork clothing and accessories are not only cute, funky, and unique, but they are often times also eco friendly!  Designers are always looking for ways to use up all those scraps of fabric and instead of throwing them away, some folks have discovered the age old art of patchwork!  Using up old scraps can create a very unique and completely one of a kind item.  Keeping fabric scraps out of our landfill and given a new life is such a wonderful way to reduce your carbon footprint.  By purchasing these items you are supporting small businesses while also reducing your carbon footprint and treating our Mother Earth with respect...and looking good while doing it :).  Support designers who are saying no to waste and yes to patchwork!

Check out Hip Mountain Mama's large selection of patchwork clothing and accessory items.  Designers are getting creative and producing anything from more hippie style skirts to very classy patchwork items!  Pin It

Love is the Answer

During a meditation this morning the word LOVE kept flowing into my mind and body.  The word LOVE, hearts, and the color red were flowing all around my sacred space until my entire being was filled with LOVE.  When reflecting back, it hit me, LOVE really is the answer!  If you LOVE something, whether it's a person, animal, object, place, or even yourself, you will cherish it.  You will never intentionally hurt something you LOVE and you will only treat these things with the greatest respect.  So my message or thought for you today is to simply LOVE more.  The more LOVE we put out there the move LOVE we will receive...and who couldn't use a little more LOVE in their lives?  LOVE your bothers, LOVE your sisters, LOVE your friends, LOVE the earth, LOVE the bees, and most of all LOVE yourself!  If you need a little reminder to spread more LOVE into the universe write the word LOVE on your wrist, or write it on a piece of paper and tape it to your refrigerator, or hold a crystal or piece of jewelry in your hand generating all the LOVE you have into this object, then wear the object or place it somewhere that you will see it often

Go on now, spread some LOVE!

Hip Sister Review: Vintage Patch Tunic/Dress

Every time I get a new item from Hip Mountain Mama it becomes my new favorite thing to wear and the Vintage Patch Tunic/Dress is no exception! What an absolutely adorable piece of clothing this is! I wore this to a Phish show recently and literally received dozens of compliments on it-it's a show stopper ya'll!

The best thing about this item is that it's totally versatile-the elastic stretchy top allows you to wear it as a tube top OR as a very flattering skirt. I can't decide which way I like it better:) The patches themselves are really cool-each solid patch has a cute little embroidered star detail on it and every one of these will be completely unique. I'm a girl who loves mixing patterns, colors and textures so I really can't lose with this beauty.

Another feature that I love about the Vintage Patch Tunic/Dress is the length-if you wear it as a tube top it is tunic length which I LOVE and if you wear it as a skirt it will fall just around your knee area, one of my favorite skirt lengths for sure. This top is ADORABLE and has easily become one of my very favorite things to wear, whether it be around town, at the beach or dancing at a show-you are sure to get compliments!

A New Rhythm on the Horizon

As always happens this time of year, there is a shift in our universe around here.  The weather is slightly changing, the angle of the sun is different, summer adventures are coming to an end, and school is right around the corner.  We have settled in to our spontaneous summer ways of daily trips to the pool and spur of the moment bbq's, but there is something inside me these past few days that is telling me it's time for a change.  It is time to move a little bit more inward as we prepare for a new daily rhythm.

For the past 10 days I participated in Hannah's Marcotti's Joy Up journey and it was a wonderful kick off to the changes that are occurring.  It was an amazing experience with over 200 other women that really taught me how to bring more joy into my life.  I realized that slowing down and doing the simple things is what brings me a lot of joy.  Honestly I thrive on travel and adventure, but when at home it really is the little things that make me smile...having an organized home, enjoying a cocktail with a friend on the back porch, walking the dog, or spending 10 minutes each morning meditating.

During the summer months, we are busy, and we are having a lot of fun, but there isn't much time to just sit and think.  I don't take the time to turn inward or do any soul work and maybe that is just the way it is supposed to be.  I am not down on myself for not having a deep meaningful summer, because that is they way my rhythm works.  Summer is the time for getting loud, digging in the dirt, camping with friends, and just soaking in all the amazing things going on around without even stopping to think how blessed of a life I have.

However, now it is time to stop, reflect, clean things up, and start feeling the calm of what's to come.  For now, my girls and I are heading out to our favorite parks, playing in rivers, organizing our home, stocking up on crystals and heart shaped rocks, and searching out other ways to bring more meaning into our new daily rhythm that is soon to come.

Happy Mid August to you and whatever it is bringing into your lives! :)

Support Local and Organic: It's Easy!

Farms all around Colorado are having bountiful growing seasons!  What a great time to enjoy some local, fresh, and organic produce!  If you don't have your own garden and don't have the time to hit up the local farmer's market, there is another option for Colorado folks!  Have you heard of Door to Door Organics?  They drop off a box of organic produce on your doorstep!  It is not all local, but this time of year they have access to tons of local produce that fills their boxes.

Monday morning I was greeted with a lovely box on my doorstep of locally grown garlic, cucumber, zucchini, chard, and more colorful goodies.  With Door to Door you can customize your box and even add grocery items to get you through the week.  There is no commitment, you can choose the size of your box, and you can even put the service on hold if you are going out of town.  Door to Door delivers all over Colorado, Kansas, Michigan, Chicago, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Delaware.  Check their website to see if they deliver to your area.

August is Colorado Proud Month, so get out there and support local Colorado Farmers!Pin It

Mountain Time Fun

The HMM Crew (myself, husband, and our 2 daughters) enjoyed a fun family mountain adventure this past weekend.  We had family come in from Texas and New Jersey to gather in one of our favorite mountain towns.  The 11 adults and 8 kids soaked in the Colorado sunshine while playing, chatting, eating, and laughing.

When everyone departed on Sunday, my family of 4 headed to a bluegrass festival to check out one of our favorite bands, Honey Don't.  Bill Powers, (who is Honey Don't and used to play in Sweet Sunny South) wrote our Hip Mountain Mama Jingle (see below) and is an amazing song writer and person!  If you ever get a chance to see Honey Don't, I would highly recommend it...they are really fun and the music is truly awesome!

Taking weekend family adventures is something we thrive on.  Seeing new places, meeting new people, and creating new memories is a part of what living is all about for us.  It is so easy to get stuck in a rut of doing the same things day in and day out...take a moment during this end of summer season and come up with ways to shake up your daily routine.  Whether you take a weekend trip or just spend an hour exploring something new around your home, get out there and really experience life!

The Love Tunic

With the Sisterhood doing amazing reviews lately, I don't get in on the action very often.  However, with The Love Tunic I just had to chime in and let you know how amazing this top is!  I actually bought this top last summer and have worn it so much and received so many compliments that I finally decided to make it available to you in our shop.  I named it the Love Tunic, because quite frankly, I love this top.

The length is perfect as it can be worn as a dress, with jeans, yoga pants, or even shorts.  The straps have button holes on the back so you can adjust it to fit you perfectly.  The colors are really beautiful with a very natural feel.  I find this top to be very comfortable and I have worn it to so many different events and even just daily around the house.  I have even worn it in the Winter with jeans and a sweater over it.

So if you are looking for an all purpose tunic..I think this is it.  Cute, comfortable, and versatile!  What more could a girl ask for? (and only $19.00)
