Most American's will gather with family and friends for July 4th celebrations. While we will all be wearing our Red, White, and Blue, let's add a little green to the mix and remember to take care of our precious Mother Earth on which we live. Below are a few tips on keeping your celebration a bit more eco friendly....and remember it is the little things that make a difference so even if you pick one thing from this list, you are making a positive impact!
1.
Use Reusable Plates and Utensils
We've said it before lots and lots of times, but we are going to say it again. Simply use your every day plates and utensils instead of using disposables. If you don't have enough you can ask guests to bring their own...this used to be common practice at pot lucks and we see no reason we can't bring it back. If you are planning to use disposables look for biodegradable kinds and compost them at the end of the night...or wash and reuse at your next party.
2.
Skip the Decorations
Sure it's fun to decorate for parties, but it can be so wasteful. If you want to decorate plan to save decorations from years past and reuse them every year. Or decorate with things from your own backyard such as flowers from your garden.
3.
Recycle and Compost
Make sure everyone knows where to place their items that can be recycled or composted. At our home we ask people to place recyclables on the counter and we sort them at the end of the night. If you have a bucket you can ask people to put their food scraps in it and add it to your compost pile later...make sure everyone knows what can and can't be composted.
4.
Have a Party
Gathering everyone together in one space will require less energy used in everyone's houses. And...it is more fun!
5. Hang Outside
Reduce your energy consumption by utilizing sunshine and outdoor activities rather than gathering inside. Plan your get together at a time where the weather will be comfortable...if you live somewhere that is hot during the day, then plan your party for the evening, etc.
6. Choose Organics and Local
If you are hosting or attending a pot luck, choose a dish that is organic and/or local. A nice plate of fresh organic fruit or some guacamole made with organic avocados are easy choices. Farmer's Markets are usually in full swing this time of year so hit up your local market and use what is in season to create your dish. If you are grilling look for local and/or organic options.
7. Fireworks
Fireworks is a 4th of July tradition and is something most people look forward to. If you have a large gathering you can cut down on your waste from fireworks by just doing a few at the party rather than everyone doing the same amount at their own homes. You can also go to a firework show rather than doing them at home.
8. Invitations
Are you hosting a party? Call, email, or use Evites to invite people and skip on the paper invitations.
9. Plant a Tree
Start a 4th of July tradition and gather up your friends to help you plant a tree!
