Hip Mountain Sister Review: Rainbow Spinner Skirt

Spinning With Rainbows

I have to say I absolutely LOVE my Rainbow Spinner Skirt! I was pleasantly surprised at how soft the material is, and by how much there is. You can’t help but spin around in it, I love the way the material flows! The skirt is so full, but the material is so light it has become my favorite summer skirt. (In the fall and winter I plan on wearing legwarmers or tights underneath it.)

I have worn my Rainbow Spinner Skirt with several color tees and tanks and it goes with just about anything. The colors in the skirt are bright, but not overdone. They’re not fluorescent, which makes it very easy to pair with tops. It runs true to size, I am 5’7” and ordered a large. The large is a little big and I’m sure a medium would have fit perfect, but due to the elastic waist the sizes are somewhat interchangeable. The tag does say hand wash, but I have washed it in the washing machine on the gentle cycle. Also unlike other multi-colored pieces the colors did not fade or run with washing.

I have worn my Rainbow Spinner several times, and it’s actually perfect to wear to the beach over my suit. Even if it gets wet, it dries very quickly. I also wore it to a powwow, to a state park for a cookout, or just to the local farmer’s market. No matter were I wear it, I always receive many welcome compliments!

Going Green on the 4th of July

Most American's will gather with family and friends for July 4th celebrations.  While we will all be wearing our Red, White, and Blue, let's add a little green to the mix and remember to take care of our precious Mother Earth on which we live.  Below are a few tips on keeping your celebration a bit more eco friendly....and remember it is the little things that make a difference so even if you pick one thing from this list, you are making a positive impact!

1. Use Reusable Plates and Utensils
We've said it before lots and lots of times, but we are going to say it again.  Simply use your every day plates and utensils instead of using disposables.  If you don't have enough you can ask guests to bring their own...this used to be common practice at pot lucks and we see no reason we can't bring it back.  If you are planning to use disposables look for biodegradable kinds and compost them at the end of the night...or wash and reuse at your next party.

2.  Skip the Decorations
Sure it's fun to decorate for parties, but it can be so wasteful.  If you want to decorate plan to save decorations from years past and reuse them every year.  Or decorate with things from your own backyard such as flowers from your garden.

3.  Recycle and Compost
Make sure everyone knows where to place their items that can be recycled or composted.  At our home we ask people to place recyclables on the counter and we sort them at the end of the night. If you have a bucket you can ask people to put their food scraps in it and add it to your compost pile later...make sure everyone knows what can and can't be composted.

4.  Have a Party
Gathering everyone together in one space will require less energy used in everyone's houses.  And...it is more fun!

5.  Hang Outside
Reduce your energy consumption by utilizing sunshine and outdoor activities rather than gathering inside.  Plan your get together at a time where the weather will be comfortable...if you live somewhere that is hot during the day, then plan your party for the evening, etc.

6.  Choose Organics and Local
If you are hosting or attending a pot luck, choose a dish that is organic and/or local.  A nice plate of fresh organic fruit or some guacamole made with organic avocados are easy choices.  Farmer's Markets are usually in full swing this time of year so hit up your local market and use what is in season to create your dish.  If you are grilling look for local and/or organic options.

7.  Fireworks
Fireworks is a 4th of July tradition and is something most people look forward to.  If you have a large gathering you can cut down on your waste from fireworks by just doing a few at the party rather than everyone doing the same amount at their own homes.  You can also go to a firework show rather than doing them at home.

8.  Invitations
Are you hosting a party?  Call, email, or use Evites to invite people and skip on the paper invitations.

9.  Plant a Tree
Start a 4th of July tradition and gather up your friends to help you plant a tree!Pin It

Meet Hip Mountain Sister: Raegan

The Hip Mountain Sisters are an amazing group of women who are helping us spread the Hip Mama vibe.  You will see them pop up on our blog a lot this year reviewing Hip Mountain Mama products.  Today we would like to introduce you to Ragean:

Hello, my name is Raegan and I am very excited to join Hip Mountain Mama's Review team! I happily consider myself to be a free spirit who loves art, music, nature, animals, interesting people & most of all, my family. I love road trips, camping in our Vanagon & seeing live music with my friends and family. Summer is my favorite season, I'm an Aquarius, a SUN WORSHIPPER through and through & I draw most of my creative energy from the Ocean, the Sunshine & the very existence of my daughter Lilah. I can't stand anything mundane or unoriginal, I feel there is just way too much creativity in each one of us to be boring! I believe in fairies, I believe in Angels & I believe that love and laughter can truly heal.

Where do you live?
I live in Seattle, Wa. with my beautiful daughter Lilah, our Chocolate Lab Pearl, Harry the Hamster & our many fish! Someday I hope to buy some land so we can add some goats, chickens, a cow and maybe some horses to the mix!
Favorite band and/or song?
My favorite band in the whole wide Universe is The Grateful Dead. My dad introduced me to them as a teenager and their music quite literally changed my life. Over the years I have toured with Phish & The String Cheese Incident and these bands also hold a very special place in my heart & soul. I have met many lifelong friends on my traveling, musical adventures!
What do you do for work?

I am the Owner/designer/creator of my own Hippie/Bohemian inspired web shop called "Lilah Bloom Creations". I started out over 10 years ago just vending at shows & festivals to make a little spending money and over time my skills increased, my ideas grew and my customer base expanded and I figured it was time to take it up a notch! I am glad I listened to my inner voice:) My shop features everything from clothing, bags & jewelry to home decor & baby gear, and every item is designed & created by yours truly, I love being able to have a full time creative outlet that also serves as my livelihood in this World.  All of my items are created using recycled, fair trade or Eco-Friendly materials & I hope to inspire others to be green as well!
Favorite Hip Mountain Mama Product?
I literally love every single item I have ever purchased from Hip Mountain Mama and I will forever be a loyal customer! I am so excited for the opportunity to join this Sisterhood Review Team and help to share the beauty of these products with others!

Favorite place on Earth?

My favorite place on Earth so far is The Redwood Forest in Humboldt County, California where I was born 32 years ago. Northern Cali holds a special place in my heart and I hope to make it back there to live someday.

Thanks Raegan...we look forward to many fun reviews from you!Pin It

Hip Mountain Sister Review: Sunburst Dress

I bought this handmade, Organic, Reversible Sunburst Dress for my 18 year-old daughter’s birthday present. I wasn’t planning on reviewing the dress since I am not wearing it, but I have to share how absolutely beautiful this dress is! She gets compliments every time she wears it and it just fits her like a glove. The sunburst appliqué is made with beautiful cotton colors and it’s really sewn well. She really likes the dress because it’s made with a stretch organic cotton, so it’s very flattering on her and is VERY comfortable.…it’s not too tight, either, which I like! It really is a great dress.

Addie’s been wearing it for nice dinners with family, after-beach hangouts and even to church. It’s classy, sassy, hip and flattering. I think I want one in my collection!

A Trip to Moose Country

You may already know this, but we are a family that likes to explore!  And what better place to live than beautiful Colorado where the explorations are endless.  We can drive in any direction for anywhere from 1-5 hours and be somewhere amazing.  We have done a lot of traveling around the state over the past several years and we are always excited to spend time somewhere new.  On Saturday we traveled up and over Rocky Mountain National Park to the other side and into beautiful Grand Lake.  It was just a 2.5 hour drive from our house and the drive was pretty amazing...into snow, above tree line, on up to over 11,000 ft!  We stayed for 4 days enjoying the multiple moose and elk sitings, hiking around, taking the kids to Junior Ranger School (which was their favorite thing), checking out the local brewery, and lots of relaxing!

View from the car at 11,000 feet

Snow on Trail Ridge Road on our way to Grand Lake (wearing my Go With The Flow Skirt which seemed quite appropriate!)

Hip Mountain Sister Review: Summer Fun Tank

The Summer Fun Tank is great!  It's been really warm and sunny in NY lately, so it's gotten a lot of use.  There's great flow and movement in the bottom which allows for a high level of comfort.  The material is soft but still thick enough that you don't have to wear anything under it.  You can go with or without a bra because the straps are thick enough to hide one, but the top part is also very stretchy like a built-in bra.
There's great versatility with the Summer Fun Tank.  I've worn it with jeans, leggings, and shorts and loved it each time.  Because it's not too flashy and a classic white, the options for matching accessories is limited only by your supply!

There's a real attention to detail on the Summer Fun Tank like the stitching on the top and little eyelets on the bottom.  This shirt has become a staple in my closet!

**Thanks Olivia!  I have to add that this is also a staple in my closet!  I wear a lot of colorful skirts and to have 1 top that goes with all of them is so wonderful!  I also wore it a lot in early Spring with some bell bottom jeans!

Family Friendly Music Festivals

We've been talking a lot about festivals lately and I have received a lot of requests to post our favorite family friendly festivals.  Let's face it, some festivals just aren't that kid friendly, so we leave the kiddos at Grandma's...but there are so many festivals these days that accommodate kids and it is great to know which ones are suitable for the whole family (and still fun for mom and dad with some awesome music).  Below is a list of music festivals that either we have gone to as a family or have been recommended by friends who have taken their kids.  Please email me or leave a comment here if you have one to add to this list so we can make this a great resource for families!

**by family friendly I mean that there are activities for kids such as bouncy houses, crafts, face painting, etc.  It can also mean that the crowds tend to be a bit smaller and/or mellower and there are usually a lot of kids that attend.  But please remember that any time you get a large group of people together there can always be dangers, so make sure to follow up with this list, do your own research, ask around to see if a certain festival will be suitable for your family.  And be sure to check out our 10 tips for taking kids to festivals! **

Meet Hip Mountain Sister Michele

The Hip Mountain Sisters are an amazing group of women who are helping us spread the Hip Mama vibe.  You will see them pop up on our blog a lot this year reviewing Hip Mountain Mama products.  Today we would like to introduce you to Michele:
Michele with her oldest daughter, who is heading to College this Fall, at Mesa Verde!

I’m a movin’ and groovin’ mama! I love to be outside, listen and boogie to music, paint, garden, hike, camp with my family and I’m a total ‘birdnerd’. My kids can name most raptors in our parts of town and I am oh, so proud!  I am also a distance runner. Some may say I am crazy to run the distances I do, but I enjoy training for distance running. I’m not competitive; running is just my Zen. I breathe more deeply and my worries and stresses melt away as I enjoy nature’s landscapes and Colorado’s abundant wildlife. Before I turn 40 this fall, I’m doing one crazy relay race called The Wild West Relay. I’m on a team of 12 runners who run 200 miles from Fort Collins to Steamboat Springs, CO in 24 hours under the full moon. “Get your ass over the pass!” is their motto. I know, craziness—totally looking forward to it!

I do have a passion for birding and I have joined the movement in getting our kids back to nature. I started a nature club at my kids’ school and we are getting ready to write a grant for a cool birding project in the fall. I love being with kids outdoors and seeing their excitement and sense of adventure. It reminds me of simpler days as a kid back East exploring the creeks, woods and floating on the lakes with not a care in the world! My four kiddos keep me busy and active with school life, sports and cooking lots of tasty, healthy grub…not to mention one hyperactive, slightly neurotic border collie and one super cool cat that are part of our loud, crazy brood. Life is full and slightly overflowing, but I wouldn’t have it any other way.

I love Hip Mountain Mama and their mission to live a more sustainable lifestyle as well as their support for local business, Ma and Pa Shops and their support of fair trade practices. I have a few beautiful skirts from HMM that I love and my favorite reusable product so far has been the Eco-friendly Dryer Balls. They rock! They shorten the dryer loads, eliminate the need for chemical-laden dryer sheets and I love to put my own essential oils on them (sandalwood is my favorite right now). I take the laundry out of the dryer and I’m just whiffin’ in satisfaction …mmmmmm…and they are completely natural, made out of wool and last for years. How cool is that?

Mountain Memories

I was going through old photos this week and I started thinking about how many amazing Colorado places I have been to over the past several years.  I have lived in many different places in my life including Canada, Texas, and quite a few Colorado towns.  Out of my 35 years in life I have lived in CO for 20 of those and I definitely call Colorado home.  From small mountain towns, to College towns, to the city, and currently the Northern part of the state, I have explored and lived in a large portion of the state.  I wanted to share a little bit of Colorado mountain scenery with you today!  Enjoy!

Hip Mountain Sister Review: Organic Owl Skirt

Feeling the owl vibe

I Love owls.  So, when I saw this skirt on Hip MountainMama’s website, I knew I had to own it.  It did not disappoint.  The owl appliqué chilling on the tree branch is so adorable and unique.  Also, this skirt is perfect for any event.  I have worn it around town, music festivals, and it’s ideal for a night out on the town. It is super comfortable, light weight, and rests great on your hips.  I chose to purchase the earthy grey color but it is also available in a really pretty plum color

The length of this skirt is perfect.  It is an A line skirt, made of organic cotton, that fits right above your knees with an elastic waistband.  I have worn it atop of leggings on chilly nights paired with boots and a button up cardigan to keep me warm.  During the warm, sunny days, I like to pair it with a tank top and a pair of flip flops.  For a night out on town, I pair it with a sexy tank top, some bangles and a necklace, and a cute pair of flip flops, and ta-da, I am ready for a fun night ahead!

Another feature that I Love about this skirt is that it is made of organic cotton and practices fair trade.  It is great feeling to support fair trade products because I can be assured that workers are being treated with equality and fair trade also helps to support a sustainable environment.   That is why I love to buy products from Hip Mountain Mama, a company that believes in these practices.

-Amanda Irvin

Thanks Amanda.  To check out this skirt and other fair trade hand made skirts, please check out our Skirts and Dresses Section.   To learn more about Amanda, please check out her intro here

We've Got Your Festival Gear

Are you heading out to your favorite music festival this summer?  Whether you are hitting up the local event, traveling distances, going with your friends, or taking your kids, we've got you covered!  If you are taking kids this year, be sure to check out our 10 tips for taking kids to festivals and see below for some great HMM gear to take along with you.

1.  Clothing:  We carry tons of comfy, groovy, and really fun skirts/dresses and tanks that are perfect for spending the day outside.  We've even got some great long sleeves and hoodies for those chilly nights and a great pair of tie dye flair pants for those mountain festivals where it stays cool all day.

2.  Bags:  You are going to need a really good bag to take your festival goods inside...blanket, food, water, etc.  Our Phatty Carry All Bag  and Veggie Patch Tote make wonderful festival bags that are large enough for all your needs.  We also have a great Hemp Back Pack and a smaller Back Pack for those who don't need to carry as much.

3.  For Your Munchies:  You will probably want to bring in a few snacks so you are not spending a bunch of money on festival food all day.  Be sure to bring in your munchies the sustainable way by using a Tiffin, Snack Taxi's, or an Insulated Lunch Bag.  And make sure to bring in some water in a reusable water bottle.

4.  Accessories:  You might want a hip hat to help protect from the sun, or you might need some leg warmers when it get's chilly, and a cute headband is always fun when you are grooving to tunes all day!

5.  Protection:  Are you in a buggy area?  We've got some great natural bug spray to help with those pests.  We also carry some Magic Salve that is great for any first aid kit!  And don't forget about your lips...grab some lip balm with SPF!

6.  Kids:  If you are taking your kids, you will need to make sure they have plenty of things to keep them happy.  Hip Mountain Mama has a section in our shop devoted to Kids Festival Gear.  Check it out to see what we take along with us!  Some Rainbow Kid Leg Warmers are a favorite around here!

Where do you live?  beautiful and charming Savannah, GA
What is your favorite thing to do on your day off? I absolutely LOVE the sun and the sand, so we make it to the beach as often as we can.  If we don't venture to the ocean, we like to hike along the river at Skidaway Island State Park here in Savannah.
Favorite band and/or song? I have many favorites, but all-time favorite live show is undoubtedly Widespread Panic. I also love and appreciate many singer/songwriters like John Prine, Susan Tedeschi, Gillian Welch, and Jerry Joseph (to name a few).
What do you do for work? I am a stay-at-home mama, and although the toughest job I've ever had, it's the most rewarding, and I count my many blessings each and every day!
Favorite quote?
"Life is one big road with lots of signs. So when you riding through the ruts, don't complicate your mind. Flee from hate, mischief and jealousy. Don't bury your thoughts, put your vision to reality. Wake Up and Live!"
-Bob Marley

Educate a boy, and you educate an individual. Educate a girl, and you educate a community.
African proverb via Greg Mortensen

Real beauty knocks you a little bit off kilter.

- Henry David Thoreau
Best all time vacation?  Jam Cruise, hands down!!
Favorite person? My husband, my mama, and my Geemama (mama's mama) :) and of course, Susan Tedeschi, herself! ;)
Favorite Hip Mountain Mama Product? I love it all, but the kind clothes (skirts especially) are my faves!
Favorite place on Earth? Easily Lake Sinclair in itty-bitty, teeny-tiny Milledgeville, GA.  I have so many fond memories of growing up there water-skiing, catching lightening bugs, fishing, boating, & rocking on the screened porch, to name a few.  I'm easy to please, and I truly believe the small things in life hold the greatest treasure of all!
