Sisterhood Review: Eco Scrubs

We are hearing a lot of buzz about these eco scrubs!  We had another Sister write a review a few weeks ago, but people just love them so much, we had another review come in!  Enjoy

There are three things I love about the eco scrubs by Rub-Bits besides being a tough ass scrubber in the kitchen (Coming from a mom of 4 who cooks a lot, and has two young, rowdy boys, this means a lot!!!).

First Reason: (Feel good one): It’s biodegradable since it’s made of natural loofah. I love that I can chuck it in my composter when it’s done. And I don’t seem to be close to chucking it anytime soon, as I have been scrubbing with one of them in the kitchen and it’s holding up great. Seriously, this little scrubber rocks!

Second Reason: (Helps your marriage) Unlike traditional sponges, the RubBit scrubber doesn’t retain water when you are done using it. Love this. If you have a hubby like mine, who constantly uses a sponge and then leaves it soaking with water… well, squeezing out the nasty sponge after having it soak all night in dishwater, is not fun! Nor does it smell good! Nor does it help friendly conversation in the morning with the hubby! The RubBit scrubber just doesn’t hold the water, so it has been fantastic not to have the smelly, wet sponge in the sink. Now my hubby is more than welcome to help!

Third Reason: (I’d say my favorite!) I dig that the RubBit scrubber doesn’t hold food scraps in the fibers from scrubbing cooking pans. I have used the traditional brush scrubber and I have to constantly clean out the bristles or just chuck the brush all together because the food either gets stuck in the bristles or they just bend in half! We eat a lot of eggs and oatmeal in our house and having to scrub aluminum pans is a constant. The RubBit scrubber really does hold up, scrubs off the food and doesn’t get stuck in the loofah fibers. It’s really made scrubbing in the kitchen easier!

Green Laundry Routine

I have spent the past few years on a journey to find the most natural laundry routine.  I started out back in 2000, when I switched from Tide to Seventh Generation laundry detergent.  I used natural laundry detergents for the next several years before making my next switch from conventional fabric softeners to natural fabric softeners.  My next step was forgoing fabric softeners all together and instead using vinegar.  Then I took the next step to hanging my laundry outside to dry and using handmade detergents.  I have since made a few more tweaks and I am finally at a place where I love my natural laundry routine.  Doing laundry is something we do a lot of and yes there are other methods that are equally or more natural than what I do...but I wanted to share my routine with you in the hopes that you don't spend 11 years trying to figure it out yourself.

Feature Friday: Modelling Beeswax

We discovered Modelling Beeswax at a local sustainable living fair about 5 years ago and were instantly hooked! It really appealed to the kids and I on many different levels and I found myself later that day in a meditative state playing with the beeswax. So, what is Modelling Beeswax and what do you do with it? Well, it's beeswax that comes in 4 x 1.5 inch sheets in many beautiful colors. It starts out solid, but when warmed up by your hands it turns soft and is able to be molded into many different objects.

It allows the artist to experience art through all their senses with it's pleasant smell, bright colors, and clean handling. It can be molded into animals, people, flowers, rivers, or anything your imagination can come up with.

It does take some patience waiting for the beeswax to warm up. One suggestion, if you are homeschooling, would be to have circle time while everyone holds some beeswax in their hand. At the end of circle time, the beeswax should be ready to go. Another suggestion is to place your beeswax on a plate and find a sunny place for the beeswax to sit for a while. In about 20 minutes it should be soft ready to use. We usually work with beeswax in a sunny spot in the house to keep it soft while we are using it. Once we are done with a creation we will place it out of the sun so it can harden.

Modelling Beeswax is so much fun for kids and adults. You can let your artwork harden to use as decor or toys, or warm it up and re use it again. It is natural, it stimulates imagination, and can be a very relaxing activity.

You can purchase Modelling Beeswax at Hip Mountain Mama in sets of 6, 8, 12, or 15 with the 8 pack being our plant colored beeswax.  Give it a try (see coupon below)!

A few modelling beeswax creations made by Nicole of Garden Mama!

Enjoy!

Want to try it out?  Here is a 10% off coupon on all of our Modelling Beeswax packs from now until Friday March 4th.  Code: "Model"Pin It

What Are Soap Nuts?

Have you heard about Soap Nuts?  I had heard the term here and there over the past few years and it has always peaked my interest.  It's funny that I didn't look into them until recently and what I have experienced has been amazing. You know when you try a new product and you just love it so much, you want to tell everyone?  Well this is how I feel about Soap Nuts.  The first time I used them, I really put them to the test.  I used one bag of Soap Nuts for 4 loads of laundry, in a row, and the results were stunning.  My laundry came out soft, clean, and looking better than ever.  Really...my husband thought I was a bit nuts because I couldn't stop talking about how nice the laundry looked.

So what are Soap Nuts?  Well they are actually not even a nut, but they are the fruit from the Sapindus Mukorossi tree which is primarily found in North India.

What makes them good for cleaning your laundry?  The Soap Nuts contain a natural cleaning agent called saponin.  Saponin is a natural detergent commonly used for cleaning among many other things.  Soapnuts have long been used in the Western world for soap production, usually together with many chemical additives which are not necessary for the actual washing process and are damaging to the user as well as our environment.

What makes them eco friendly?  Soapnuts have become a very popular environmentally friendly alternative to  manufactured chemical detergents.  Soap nuts are 100% organic, natural, and biodegradable.  4 Soap Nuts can be used for up to 5 loads of laundry, and after the 5 loads you can compost them.

How do you use them?  Simply place 4 Soap Nuts in a small cotton drawstring bag and pull the bag closed.  Toss the bag in your washing machine along with your laundry and run your washer as you normally would.  I was told to use warm or hot water, but that is a no no in our household, so I used cold water and everything turned out fabulous!  If you like a little scent in your laundry, simple place 3-4 drops of essential oil in the bag.

What else can you use soap nuts for?  Soap Nuts are not just great for your laundry, but also work for other household cleaning.  Making Soapnut Soak (see recipe below) is easy and can be used to for many things such as Mosquito repellent, liquid hand soap, shampoo, liquid laundry detergent, all purpose cleaner, window cleaner, cleaning jewelry, and more.

How to make Soaput Soak:

1. Bring 4 cups of water to a boil in a heavy saucepan with a lid.
2. Turn off the heat and toss 6-8 soapnuts in the saucepan with the hot water.
3. Cover the saucepan, and let it sit overnight.
4. In the morning, discard the remaining soapnut shells.
5. Pour the cooled liquid into a container with a lid or squirt bottle.
6. If you’d like your Soapnut Soak to have a scent, add your favorite essential oils. We suggest lemon or tea tree oil for bathroom cleanser, lavender for cold water laundry loads, and Sweet Orange for dishwasher cleaning liquid.

This batch of Soapnut Soak will wash at least 8 loads of laundry. Use 1/4 to 1/2 cup for each load. (You can adjust this amount as needed, depending on the size of the load and how dirty the contents are).
Store in a cold place such as your refrigerator if not used within 7 days.

There you have it!  Soap Nuts in a nut shell!  If you are interested in trying this eco friendly method of washing your clothes, check out our laundry supplies section to find several different options....including a trial size bag for $2.49.

Enjoy!

**Great for use in HE washers, safe for septic systems, and wonderful for use on babies clothing or people with sensitive skin.Pin It

Time For Me

I can't quite put my finger on it, but I feel the change.  I turned 35 last month and instantly there was a shift in my universe.  I didn't consciously decide to think or be or do things differently...it just sort of happened.  The universe presented me with a new and refreshing way of looking at life and I have embraced it.  I am not sure where this is going or what the future will look like, but I am rolling with my new lease on life.

One major shift has been making time for me.  For the past 7 years I have not had much 'me' time.  Sure I have had hundreds of play dates with friends, dates with my husband, vacations, hikes, camping trips, and other fun things....but nothing that involved just me.  99% of my time for the last 7 years has been with my children and/or my husband.  It didn't occur to me, very often, that I was still my own person...I just accepted my new lifestyle.  Even spending time with my good friends always involved the kids and/or husbands.

Now when I say me time, I don't mean having 2 hours alone to clean my home or an evening alone reading a book.  I am talking getting out there, either alone or with friends, to do the things I really enjoy.  Hiking, going to concerts, ladies night, playing guitar, taking a class, drinking coffee on a patio...and the list goes on.  Previous to this new way of thinking, it didn't even occur to me to go out for coffee alone,  meet my girlfriends out for a drink, or sign myself up for a class.

I love my family more than anything, but rediscovering myself and what I enjoy has been revolutionary.  Maybe it's because I turned 35 or maybe because it's a new year, or maybe it is because my kids are 4 and 6 and I am experiencing some freedom or maybe there is some cosmic shift of energy that is affecting me...who knows, but whatever it is I am loving it!  I feel happier.  Content with where I am and who I am.  I smile more.  And, in turn, my entire family is happier.

I have a feeling I will be writing more on this topic this year as I am still feeling changes out there that just haven't reached me yet.  For now I am enjoying hiking with girlfriends, ladies nights, and learning my guitar with friends....sorry, no kids or husbands allowed! :)Pin It

Baby Wearing Extravaganza! 3 Giveaways!

For today's feature I wanted to touch on a subject that we are very passionate about, Baby Wearing.  For those of you who aren't familiar with this term, I am talking about carrying your child using some form of baby carrier rather than keeping them in a car seat, stroller, or in a crib.  Granted there are times when a stroller, car seat, or crib are necessary and we aren't saying you are a bad person for using these devices.  The point is, that babies want and need to be carried a lot during the day.  They want to be close to Mom or Dad, feel the heartbeat, and experience an all around feeling of comfort and safety.  Too many times these days we are pressured to let babies cry it out in a crib so we can get on with our day.  I think some people just don't realize how much easier life can be if you just carry your child.

Carrying your child doesn't have to be something negative and prevent you from doing what you need to do.  Wear your baby while doing dishes, going for a walk, shopping, at a concert, etc etc.  I used to sit on an exercise ball with my baby in a sling at my desk to check emails.  And when traveling, a baby carrier takes up far less room than a stroller!

Would you let your spouse cry alone in their bed while ignoring them so you could do dishes?  If your friend had a bad day and needed a hug or shoulder to cry on, would you deny her this?  If you answered no to these questions, then you should try and treat your baby just as you would treat a best friend or spouse.  If they need to be held, hold them.  Really, they aren't asking that much of us...we brought these babies into our lives and our only job is to feed, protect, love and comfort them.  Baby carrying can help you on your parenting journey and will be something you and your baby will cherish for a lifetime.

If you haven't already tried baby wearing, I would highly recommend it!  Our favorite carriers are the Moby Wrap and New Native Baby Pouch.  Although we have discontinued carrying New Native in our shop, we still think very highly of this sling and recommend it to anyone.  We carry Moby Wrap's entire line of Wraps and I still use mine to carry my 4 year old (I even carried my 6 year old at a festival last summer in it).

Today we are so excited to be giving away 3 Carriers!
1.  New Native Medium Natural Baby Carrier

Door to Door Orgranics: Review and Giveaway

Have you heard of Door to Door Organics?  It is a wonderful company that delivers a variety of fruit, veggie or mixed fruit/veggie boxes straight to your door. The contents change every week based on the freshest arrivals from their organic farms.  Door to Door currently delivers throughout Colorado, the Kansas City area, Michigan, and the Chicago area (to find out if they deliver to your home, please check here).

You may be wondering if this service is a good idea for you and your family.   Are you a new mom who is having a hard time making it to the grocery store each week?  Are you a working man or woman with or without kids that would enjoy a little help with grocery shopping?  Are you passionate about eating organic produce?  Are you an adventurous cook who likes to come up with new ideas for fresh produce?  Whatever your current situation, everyone can benefit from and will love a little box of goodies delivered on their door step once a week.

Here is a little bit about how it works.  First, simply visit Door to Door Organics and make sure they deliver to your zip code.  If you are within their delivery area, then choose from one of their many box sizes and varieties.  The nice thing is that when you sign up, there is no contract...you can sign up, cancel, or place a hold at any time.  If you are going out of town for a week and don't want your box to show up, simply skip that week.  You will only get charged when your box is delivered.  If you decide you want to have the box delivered in the Winter and not the Summer, simply cancel when you are ready.

Another wonderful benefit of this service is that you can customize your box.  If you don't like broccoli and broccoli is on the list to show up in your box that week, you simply hop on line and substitute something else for the broccoli.  And, you can shop for additional items each week.  If you can't make it to the grocery store one week, then add your grocery items your Door to Door Organics box.  Some of the additional items you can choose from include beverages, flour, honey, cereal, organic meat, coffee, and so much more.  You can go here for a complete list of what they offer.

Having groceries delivered is a great way to relieve some stress in your life and when ordering from Door to Door you can be sure you are getting quality and natural products.  Whether you are a new mom, old mom, busy single person, someone who is having trouble finding time to get to the store, or just want one less errand to run, Door to Door Organics is for you!  Give it a try...you have nothing to loose!

Feature Friday: Play Crowns

At Hip Mountain Mama we strongly encourage imaginative play with children.  Children will naturally use their imaginations in play when they aren't distracted with TV, battery operated toys, or an overabundance of toys.  As a Mama of 2 young ones I am amazed with what the kids come up with when left on their own with just a few natural toys.  My girls play in their 'Play Fort' with their dress up clothes, kitchen food, and blocks for hours.  One minute they are creating a cafe, the next they are putting on a ballet for their dolls.  It is such a delight to watch and know that they are not only having fun, but also doing what kids are supposed to do in order to have a happy and balanced childhood.

The dress up clothes we have offered our girls are plentiful and dressing up is one of their favorite things to do.  This is true for most children and this is why we made a decision to fill our shop with many dress up clothes from mermaids, to knights, to unicorns

Today we are featuring a new dress up item that we just love.  Our new handmade butterfly and toadstool play crowns will make the perfect addition to your child's dress up world.  These are Mama made in the US using felt with an elastic strip on the back making it a perfect fit for children of all ages.

These crowns will make a very special birthday gift as the birthday girl or boy wears his/her very own crown throughout the celebration and for years to come.  If you have a special child in your life that you want to help spark some imaginative play, these are perfect.

Inspiration Board

I have had a strong feeling lately that I need to bring in more positive and inspiring things into my life. I need to surround myself with beautiful, creative, authentic, and positive things and people. Leave the negativity, fakeness, and unkind things behind and look ahead with a fresh start. Winter is always an inward time for me and this year is no different. It is a time to reflect on my behavior, my surroundings, my passions, and everything going on in my life..good or bad. It is a time to stop living on auto pilot, slow down, and really focus on things that make me happy. One thing that I learned from an E Course I am taking right now, Inside Out, is to think about the things you do not value in your life, then let those things go so you can focus on the things you do value. Seems really simple, right? Well in concept it is easy and it is a really important practice, but it does take some time and inner work to figure these things out. I am slowly coming out on the other side with thoughts of strictly surrounding myself with loving, inspiring, kind, and authentic people. And with doing things that make me happy, foster my creativity, make me laugh, and evoke good feelings. I am also working on creating a home filled with light, positivity, inspiration, and lots of love.

With all this being said, it is what has led me to creating an Inspiration Board (and the advice from a good friend). I have made vision boards before, but this is different. My board will be filled with quotes, photos, and items that really inspire me to live life to it's fullest. To do what I enjoy with lots of laughs and good folk.

I just started this board a few days ago and it is a work in progress, but I am thrilled to have it in place. Thrilled to have a place to put my inspiring things and thrilled to have a board to look at to lift my spirits and get me pumped.

So, I am wondering...do you have an inspiration board or some area in your home that is filled with things that you love? Or...do you have a quote you think I should add to my board?

Merrell: Sponsor Review & Giveaway

We are so excited to bring Merrell on board as one of our new sponsors. If you live in Colorado, or any other outdoor active area, you have probably heard of Merrell. I first starting wearing Merrell hiking shoes when I moved back to Colorado in 1999 and haven't stopped since. My kids have even been lucky to own a pair or 2 of Merrell shoes in their short little lives.

The Hip Mountain Mama family is passionate about getting outdoors. We have a rule in our home that everyone must get outside every day. Getting outside for us includes hiking, camping, snow shoeing, snow boarding, sledding, hanging out in rivers, or just simply playing. A lot of these activities require proper gear and we have found Merrell to be top notch when it comes to summer and winter outdoor footwear and clothing.
Last week we were graced with some below 0 temps, but we headed outside anyway. I threw on my Merrell Isodore down coat and my Merrell Tempest High boots and headed out to play.

I have to say, even at -4 degrees out, I was really warm in my Merrell gear. My kids were all running back in the house, but I was so comfortable I stayed out a bit longer to play with the dog. Being able to stay warm outside in the Winter is very important to me and it makes sense to have high quality items that are going to help me achieve my goal of getting outside every day. Getting outdoors helps me to feel better, increase my energy, helps me get exercise, and helps to keep me balanced.
Merrell has been so kind as to offer 1 lucky winner one of their amazing Tazlinas. I have one of these tops and it is so wonderful! Here is how to enter...

Mandatory:

1. Check out Merrells website, then come back here and leave a comment. Make sure to leave an email address so we can get a hold of you when you win :)

What is Fair Trade?

At Hip Mountain Mama we have filled our shop with many items carrying the label 'Fair Trade'. You may have heard this term before and had the thought that this was a good thing, but how many of us really know what Fair Trade is? Well I am here today to shed some light on what Fair Trade actually means.

Fair Trade is an organized social movement and market-based approach that aims to help producers in developing countries make better trading conditions and promote sustainability. The movement advocates the payment of a higher price to producers as well as social and environmental standards. It focuses in particular on exports from developing countries to developed countries.

So, basically, when you purchase something with the Fair Trade label you are helping people in some of the poorest communities on Earth. Fair Trade looks to create tremendous, positive, and long-term impact for artisans and farmers while delivering quality products to the public.

When consumers choose these high quality and affordable products from Fair Trade Organizations, children’s school fees are paid; nutritional needs met; health care costs are covered; the poor - especially women - are empowered; the environmental impact of production, sourcing, and transport is mitigated to the fullest extent possible; and, much more. Such an impact is created, because Fair Trade approaches development as a holistic process.

So, next time you see the label 'Fair Trade' you can feel good that the product was made by hard working people in other countries who are paid a fair wage and working in excellent conditions (often times working at home or with other groups of friends). You are helping to improve their quality of life and ensuring their families have more opportunities.

It is important that we understand that, as humans, we are all here on Earth together and everyone has the same needs and desires. Helping people in other countries by supporting Fair Trade is an excellent way to do your part in helping other communities thrive and grow. That being said, we also support USA made items and carry many of these in our shop, with the intent to grow. Whether purchasing Fair Trade or Made in the USA, supporting these small and hard working businesses is very important and a great way to help our economy.
