OSC:A Greener Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is quickly approaching and honestly it is hard to believe.  We have had such a warm Autumn here that Thanksgiving has really felt like it snuck up on us.  But it's here ...in just over a week we will be gathering with friends and family to enjoy Thanksgiving traditions.  Whether you are hosting this year or going to someone elses house, here are a few ways you can make this holiday a bit more eco friendly.

~Buy organic-Whether you usually buy 90% of your groceries organic or 0%, why not make an effort to choose 1 item that you wouldn't normally buy organic and find an organic and/or local alternative.  Green beans perhaps...maybe the potatoes?

~Reuse-If you are hosting Thanksgiving this year, forget about the paper plates and use your regular dishes.  If you must use disposable search out eco friendly brands that are biodegradable or made with recycled materials.

~Compost and Recycle-throw your fruit and veggie scraps in the compost pile and your recyclables in the appropriate bin.  If you attend an event where they don't recycle, consider taking the recyclable products home with you to put in your bin.

~Cloth Napkins-Set out cloth napkins at dinner. If you don't have enough, simply find some material and cut it into squares...don't worry about the ends fraying, it's only a napkin!

If you can select 1 item from this list, you will be making a difference!  And think, if we all did 1 thing from this list we could make an even larger impact!  Have you made an easy eco friendly change lately?  If not, or even if you have, here is your chance to make a difference!  I am going to someone elses home for Thanksgiving this year and I plan to make my dish using organic ingredients.  What will you do?

Please share your Green Thanksgiving ideas with us in the comments below!

  1. I hemmed 40+ cloth napkins in prep for lots of family gathering for a couple days. 20+ people require lots of napkins on hand! Lots of people also means lots of hands to wash dishes so no disposables for us! OSC!

  2. All great suggestions. Thanks for all you do. I'm going to attempt to make my first all vegan, gluten-free thanksgiving this year. It has been something I've wanted to do for many years now. But you've reminded me that I better get cranking on getting my recipes together. How did it get here so fast. ENJOY!
