OSC: Your First Change

Last week I announced that we were bringing back our One Small Change Project...a project where we ask you to make small eco friendly changes in your life one at a time.  I am so excited to have this project back in motion as it is something I am very passionate about...and it is getting my butt back in gear on making these changes.  It is so easy to fall off the wagon and slip into convenient habits...but with a little encouragement we can all stay on track together and make easy changes that will create a happier Earth.

So, today I am asking, what will your first change be?  You don't have to start today or even know what your change will be today, but start getting those wheels turning!  Your idea will come to you, I promise!  Once you know what your change will be, let us know in the comments here...if you want to blog about your change, leave us a link to your blog post and we would love to stop by and read your post (and share your post with others if it's ok with you).

Now I will tell you a little bit about my change.  During our first round of One Small Change I finally got around to, what I thought was going to be my hardest change, hanging my laundry to dry.  I was dreading it and you know what, it's those things we dread the most that end up being things we really need to go for...right?!  So 2 summers ago my dryer sat quiet as I got outside to hang my clothes...and I loved it...the best feeling, a great money savings, and a very relaxing activity.  Then this summer I slipped back to my old ways and those past excuses came bubbling to the surface...I don't have enough time, it's too cold or hot out, it's easier to use the dryer.  So this summer my dryer worked hard and I felt the repercussions.  I felt guilty, we spent $30 more on electricity each month, and I missed out on those relaxing and good feelings.  In the back of my mind I knew I was trying to come up with a One Small Change, but it took me a few days before I realized this was going to be my change.  I was talking with some friends over the weekend and I came clean that I had not hung my laundry at all this summer...and some how with that coming clean I knew what I needed to do.  The very next day I got out there and hung my laundry...and those amazing feelings came on strong...I'm outside, I am helping our Earth, I feel connected to the past, etc. etc.!  Then the next day (yesterday) I hung my laundry again and there you have it...my One Small Change is to get back into the habit of hanging my laundry outside.  And I am not even going to put pressure on myself to do it every time...my goal is to hang it outside at least once a week!  My plan is to stick with this for about a month before moving on to my next change!

If you know your change, please let us know here!  I will be back next week to let you know how my change is going and to hopefully share with you other people's changes!  Until then....

  2. I love this idea! I am trying to make small changes all the time - and I love the idea of documenting them. I think I'll start documenting mine (one/week?) on my blog in an effort to share ideas and hopefully get some tips on what else I can do!

  4. You posted this and I immediately knew what mine was. Much like your laundry I have stopped making my own bread. So, my small change is going to be to stop buying bread at the store and make my own again. It takes a bit of a commitment, but it is so much better. My bread doesn't have packaging, and I know everything that goes into it.

  5. Hi Suzy, just saw this on Twitter and read your post. Another great benefit of line-drying your clothing is that they will last longer and not shrink. This is something I always advise moms to do with their better kids' clothes. They will hold their value better and be more desirable for resale!
