Tree Huggin' Tuesday: The No Poo Method

My One Small Change for the month of May was to stop using shampoo and conditioner. In place of these I have been using baking soda and apple cider vinegar. I love it and strongly recommend you try it! I was hesitant at first, but now I love it even more than any shampoo I have ever used.

I did a lot of research and found that everyone does it just a little different. I took what I learned and came up with a way that works for me. I use the baking soda and water mix in place of the shampoo, then use the apple cider vinegar and water mixture in place of a conditioner.

Please watch the video below for details on how it works:

  1. Good for you! I tried this last fall and made it eleven days...and then I caved. I couldn't take it anymore. If I did it again, I'd try a different method because my hair was filthy, and I was baking soda and vinegar on a daily basis.

  2. I lasted all of three days. Instead I bought a homemade shampoo bar. I've been wanting to try one for awhile. It's my Small Change for June.

  3. i've been doing it for 4 months now.. we have hard water and after a while my hair feels like it has a layer of gunk on it (even when using shampoo so i figure my hair looks gross either way, might as well go no-poo). i have to strip my hair like i do my diapers, with dawn.. not sure how bad it is for my hair but if i don't nothing will take the buildup out

  4. I love baking soda and vinegar for all kinds of cleaning. I tried something like this version of no 'poo for five weeks last year, but I never felt my hair was really clean. For almost a year now, I've been using Dr. Bronner's soap bars for shampoo. I don't use conditioner (and didn't really when I was using regular shampoo). Once my soap bars are gone, I'm going to try again with the baking soda.

I've just gotten through my regular face soap (which I had bought in bulk at Costco, so it took me *forever* to get through) and I've been using a baking soda/water paste as face wash (a tip I got from theorganicsister.com). It's been a week and I'm liking it so far.

  5. I've been doing this for three weeks now - I've tried this before and caved. This time around I think what I'm learning is that my hair will have a different feel to it and I'm trying to get used to that. I'm going to review the whole thing after I've done it for 6 weeks and I'm hoping to stick with this. Commercial shampoos are generally very toxic - so this can only help me and the environment! I'm finding that my hair has more body and I can style it better with the no poo method - and yes, I'm loving not washing my hair every day too!

  6. I switched about a month ago. I've noticed that my hair gets oiler faster, but I'm okay with that. I use the same method as you describe, but with white vinegar because I hate hte smell of apple cidar vinegar. I am just loving your blog!!!
