We Garden

I started the weekend off by experiencing the wisdom and inspiration of Joel Salatin. I had learned of Joel after watching Food Inc. and became really intrigued (or you might say obsessed) with him. When I heard he was coming to speak in my area I was very excited and ready to hear his inspiring and motivating words. I came away from the event completely dedicated to growing as much of my own food as possible, supporting local farms, and buying local whenever possible.

So, I have to admit, I am not the one with the green thumb in my family. 9 years ago I couldn't keep a house plant alive and never dreamed I would ever try to grow my food. In fact our first veggie garden came about quite by accident....
A few years ago Andy built a large 8x8 sand box for Magnolia. She enjoyed her sand box, but after a while we started to notice little presents being left for us by the neighborhood cats. The thought of my kids playing in a box of sand that the cats used as a potty grossed me out. So we dug out the sand and filled it with soil, planted some seeds, and our very first veggie garden was born.
Over the next few years we added another raised bed and experimented with new veggies. This year we have decided to add 2 more raised beds (and yes I know our house is on the market, but when you get the gardening bug, there is no holding back).

We woke up on Sunday to our gardens covered with snow. By 3:00 the snow had melted and we enjoyed sitting on the porch plotting out our new gardening adventure, while fighting over who got to read our newly purchased book, "The Backyard Homestead".

I am so excited for this growing season and for learning more about this natural, age old, and perfectly harmonious activity of growing what I eat! Even though I don't have the "green thumb" in the family my desire to eat healthy, local, and nutritious food far outweighs any doubts I have that I can eventually turn my thumb green!

  1. So much fun. I know ours were covered Saturday Morning as well and all day it kept coming. I can't wait to get into them and start planting. I must look for that book!

  2. So happy (and a little jealous!) you got to hear Joel Salatin. We loved him in Food Inc. Glad to know, too, we're not alone in the challenge to really take care of our family.

  5. Awesome! Way to go putting in new raised beds even if your house is on the market... I'm like that too - I can't resist putting in a garden, even if I know I'm moving.

I read about Joel's farm in The Omnivore's Dilemma. Must have been a treat to hear him speak!

  6. I've been hook on Joel ever since Food, Inc. too! He did a local show here (Earth Eats) not too long ago and they have videos up on YouTube that I keep playing over and over.

LOL about you planning more raised beds even though you're moving - yup, you've got the bug :-)

    Best Wishes!

  7. I'm so envious that you got to see Joel Salatin live! How cool is that?

I'm like you this year (minus the successful past experience). I am bound and determined to get something to grow. Anything. I'm going to turn my thumb green if it kills me! And everything else in my yard...

  8. I am really envious of those raised beds. I put that book on hold a couple of weeks ago and am waiting for it to arrive! Everyone wants to read it. I think I need to put Food Inc on hold as well!

  9. Just another one small change. If you sell before you harvest, the new owners will have to get hooked on homegrown food, right?

  10. Oh I so wish I had some yard-space for a raised bed. I'm currently planning our first container garden, with just tomatoes and squash to start. We have so little room, just on a cement landing, and sunlight is filtered through some big trees growing on our street...I have fingers crossed that it will be a success and the beginning of a long tradition for us in growing our own food!

I had just read an article in Mother Earth News about him before we watched food inc..... last weekend I attended my second Organic Gardening class - I am a knew gardener and seriously know nothing! lol... but so many people at that class... all from different walks of life were coming together to learn to grow food.... it feels like a revoloution I tell you! Good stuff :)
