One Small Change: Cloth Trainers

Our February change of water conservation went quite well. We got our bill mid month and after comparing it with last years bill, we have used 1,000 less gallons this year. A few things we did that made the difference are:

~installed 2 low flow shower heads (these were sent to us for free by our power company)
~used less water in the kids bath and stuck with only 2 baths a week
~shorter and less showers
~Kept on with our "if it's yellow, let it mellow" (which works even better since using the family cloth)
~Played around with new ways to hand wash our dishes that resulted in using less water
~just a basic awareness of our water usage and teaching the kids to use less

I am amazed at how just being aware of your water usage can really make a difference. So, a great success and something we will carry on with!

Now, onto March...I have a dirty little secret that I am going to share with you today. Both of my girls wear disposable pull ups at night. We used cloth diapers with Sienna and for some reason just switched right over to paper pull ups for night time once she was potty trained. They both still wet the bed and I guess I just thought pull ups were the only answer.

It has been nagging at me for several months and I just kept putting it off. Well, One Small Change, has inspired me to take action! I bought 2 cloth trainers for each of the girls and will start using them as soon as they arrive. They don't wet the bed every night, so I think having 2 each will be plenty...and they are so excited to start wearing cloth and stop wearing the uncomfortable paper pull ups!

So, there you have it! One Small Change that will lead to a lot less waste in our household and will teach the kids the importance of reducing our waste!

I can't wait to hear all about your changes! And remember, if you get your post listed in the comments section of the March Change post on the One Small Change website by March 5th, you will qualify to win some amazing prizes!

  3. Love it! I love your water conservation ideas and will be putting them into practice and I love your nighttime pullup idea. I think I'll start it here at our home. I'm already washing diapers for my younger daughter, why not wash the pull ups too instead of throwing them out?

  4. Oh please let me kmow how they work. We have not been able to find a cloth diaper or anything natural to hold the amount of pee my 4 year old puts in it at night (she was potty learned at 2 but still wets the bed at night). It was really heart breaking for me to have to put away her cloth and buy disposables :(

  6. Very inspiring! Kestan has grown out of his cloth diapers and I just switched to pull ups. I can't stand using them either! I will check into the cloth trainers as well. And, so happy you like the necklace. I thought you'd like those colors. :) Thank you of always being a source of good things, Suzy!

  8. Good job with the water usage! Love your honesty too! It's hard to be "perfectly" eco-conscious, but you sure are getting there. As always, thanks for being so inspiring. Hope all is well for you guys! The blog is looking great.
    Sending much love,
    Nicole

  9. I'm really working on conserving water as well...I need to get a low flow shower head (now I'm wondering if the power company has a program like yours!)

  10. I'm having a similar issue with Pele. I've been supplementing with disposables, especially at night, because with Pele's sensory issues, even though mentally she is doing well cognitively, it is hard to potty train her so I've put it off with all this chaos going on.

My plan this spring is to work steadily on potty training her, despite the sensory issues which make it harder. Hopefully things will be settled down enough for me to do that.

She definitely does pee a lot at night. I got tired of changing the sheets a ton when I used cloth, and I kept saying, 'I'm going to potty train her!' but stressful things kept happening.

Anyway...good luck. I may get some extra large wool soakers or something, especially for during the potty-training which may take quite a while.

  11. That's really awesome! We started conserving water in our new apartment but not really by choice! I used to love long showers, but our water doesn't stay warm for very long so that's that! lol!
I'm really curious to try some cloth diapers, I wonder if it will help with potty training.

  13. Good for you! Isn't it funny the odd bits that stick around some times! We have been chatting to the solar people here today and are off to the back in a moment to get our green loan to kick us off to buying solar panels - so exciting! Thanks again for the inspiration - I have found so many other inspiring ideas through this group.

  14. We have the exact same dirty little secret at our house; both of our boys wear disposable diapers at night. I'm interested in how well the cloth trainers work for you; our boys are still little, neither one is a potty user yet, and they are very heavy night time wetters. We've been afraid they would wet right through anything cloth we put them in at night.

  15. My post for One Small Thing is a plea about litter. I often take walks and pick up litter along the quiet suburban roads in my town. It is disgusting. I'm hoping people will check out my post and leave suggestions about stopping this scourge. I get very passionate about it and am looking for a more impactful solution. Take a look and comment, please.

  18. I think therapeutic showers that use over 40 litres of water per minute are sold worldwide and are increasingly common as the world population ages and people's disposable income increases.
