Making Hankies Pretty

We have been using these organic cotton hankies for a few years now and LOVE them! So soft on our noses and we love the reduction in waste by not using disposable Kleenexes. For the past week Sienna has had a cold and has been carrying around a hankie in her pocket. It truly is adorable to see a 3 year old reach into her pocket, pull out a hankie, wipe her nose, then put it back in her pocket.

The hankies really are great, but a little plain with their natural color and hard to figure out who is using which hankie (the kids really get grossed out when they realize they wiped their nose with their sister's dirty hankie). So, Magnolia and I decided to add some flair and personality. Magnolia is a huge fan of doing anything with a sewing needle, so embroidering some designs on the hankies was the perfect solution.

The designs the kids chose were (the usual) sun, heart, peace sign, rainbow, and Magnolia wanted to write her name. We finished a few this week and hope to get to some more next week, as well as add some designs to our cloth napkins.

This was so much fun and such a great way to relax and connect with my daughter!

  1. Suzy,
This is great - we need these! And a great embroidery project to personalize them. In our house we have been using ugly rags and we have been working on trying to get the children not to call them "snot rags" - ewwww! These would definitely be a more lovely addition to our home. I am off to check them out in your shop.
    Warm wishes, Tonya

  3. Your new hankies look fantastic, what a great way to tell them apart. Recently when all of my kiddos were really sick, I ended up cutting a cute (but torn) knit sheet into 5" squares to use as hankies, as our regular stash wasn't big enough to handle the onslaught. I made them small as they would be perfect for one good nose blow, as I doubt any of the kids would have been really good at keeping their own in one place. Embroidering hankie to personalize them is a super idea, it looks like you guys had lots of fun.

  4. Hankie lovers unite! I have a stash of hankies that belonged to my great-grandmother. They're so simple, yet so pretty with their blossoming flowers and winding ivy. I've been planning to work on a little basket of hankies for Jackson, and I love the idea of personalizing them for him. Thanks for the tip! :)
